I started reading
Superlocal more than two years ago. I began to research the exciting side of Seoul as I considered another trip to Korea. I was determined to bask in the creative rays of Korean life beacause I wanted my 2nd journey to be one of healing, instead of the life-sucking pain I experienced 5 years ago. Anyway, I made contacts with several people who's work I considered inspiring, one of those being my/our future friends
Youngdoo and
Elizabeth Taylor, and the other being Superlocal. Through these people, I connected with so many other inspiring artists and designers. To this day, my circle of friends from Seoul continues to grow.
As I reflect on Superlocal, I found his fascination with food, bikes, random objects, spaces, and culture to be inspiring. His writing was short, to the point, devoid of flowery language, and consistent in delivering the 'quirky' side of visual culture. As I read his blog, I felt like I shared in his joy of the experience of life. Many times I posted on my blog as homage to Superlocal. As someone who loves taking pictures, I believe his commitment to content changed my view of reportage photography. I find blogs like Superlocal's to be a great source of inspiration in my life and I am sad to hear
Emil Goh has passed away. I never met him in person, despite my attempts, but I am glad to have known him through random comments we left on each other's blogs. In retrospect, I feel like Emil helped me fall in love with a city that I always associated with my painful past. Before I ruin this tribute by talking about myself, I'll close.
If I could, I would eat a cone pizza in his honour.
